Hot Tours: Paul McCartney, Girls Aloud, George Strait, Madonna

Topping the Hot Tours recap this week is rock legend Paul McCartney with box office totals reported from four stops on his summer concert tour. Top grosses came from Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y., the new home stadium of the New York Mets. Three sold out performances (July 17, 18 & 21) grossed $12.7 million with 109,541 in attendance. This is the second time McCartney has played the first concert in a Mets stadium. In 1965 the Beatles played the first concert ever held at Shea Stadium the team’s old home venue. Following an outdoor event in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park and a date at the BOK Center in Tulsa, the final stop on the tour came on Aug. 19 in Arlington, Texas where he played to a sellout crowd at Dallas Cowboys Stadium, another brand new state-of-the-art stadium. McCartney’s show wasn’t the first for the new NFL stadium, though. Country legend George Strait played the inaugural concert back in June.Promoter Live Nation’s U.K. division reported box office totals for Girls Aloud who toured earlier this year in support of their latest album titled Out of Control. Kicking off in late-April, the tour was the fifth outing for the British girl group who got their start in 2002 as part of the television talent show Popstars The Rivals. The act played multiple shows in 11 different venues from April through early-June, including four-show stints in both Manchester and Newcastle and five shows in London at two different arenas (O2 and Wembley). The “Out of Control Tour” grossed over $16 million (US$) from 32 performances. That amount includes the recently reported Live Nation totals as well as totals reported by Irish promoter MCD earlier this summer.
