SARAH HARDING: MY DIET AND FITNESS SECRETS

    2010 - 06.30

SEXY Sarah Harding has put on weight since Girls Aloud took a break – but is loving her curvier look.

And as a new photoshoot for Veet beauty products shows, she’s looks hotter than ever. Her figure is working for boyfriend DJ Tom Crane, 30, who plans to propose this year.

Now, in an exclusive interview, the 28-year-old reveals her food and fitness regime.

Do you ever feel the need to diet?

Only when I’m feeling bloated and that’s usually when I’ve eaten carbs. Over the years I’ve learned what my body likes and doesn’t like. I like salad and vegetables, I don’t eat a huge amount of meat, but if I fancy a steak I’ll have one.

Do you live to eat or eat to live?

I love food. My boyfriend and I cook at home together and love going to restaurants. We’re both very good in the kitchen. I’m growing my own vegetables, I’m loving my home-grown lettuce – it tastes so much better than anything from the supermarket! We’ve got carrots, leeks, raspberrys, olives, herbs – the list is endless.

What does a typical day consist of in terms of food and drink?

Coffee in the morning, and maybe a bowl of cereal or fresh fruit, although I am not a huge breakfast fan. Occasionally I might make pancakes with bacon. For lunch I’ll have a ham salad sandwich or a salad or sushi. Dinner is my favourite meal. If I eat too much for lunch I don’t enjoy my dinner. I’ll have a spag bol, Chinese or chicken kievs and salad. I’m really into well-cooked broccoli with butter and salt at the moment.

What is your one food temptation?

    Sugar. Particularly Haribo.

    What’s your favourite food?

I love spaghetti bolognese. I love cooking it too.

Do you find vitamins and supplements beneficial?

I do take a lot of vitamins to keep myself in shape – Vitamin E, glucosamine, evening primrose oil, acidophilus for digestion, and kelp tablets before you eat to help bloating.

Are you conscious of what you eat?

Not incredibly, no. I tend to eat what my body feels like it needs. I like my sugar, but everything in moderation. It’s all about the balance. If you’re eating really well most of the time, there’s no reason not to have something you fancy.

What is your best beauty secret?

Lots of sleep. I like my sleep – a good eight hours. Lots of water is also important. I fill a jug up and put in half a lemon and half a lime. That way I get my full 1.5 litres a day.

What is your daily beauty routine?

I get up and jump straight in the shower where I wash my face. I then moisturise my face and body and put on minimal make-up if I’m staying at home, or a little more if I’m going out for the day.

What do you use to keep your legs looking so smooth, toned and moisturised?

Having hair-free legs instantly makes legs look and feel great. I’ve just started using the new Veet Suprem’ Essence Hair Removal Cream which smells lovely as well as being quick and easy to use. It leaves my legs silky soft and so moisturised.

How do you keep fit and so toned, especially your legs?

Having dogs and living in the countryside is a great help as I’m up and down hills walking the dogs every day. I love horse riding, but I don’t get the chance to ride so much at the moment. Before the Girls Aloud tour last year we all used the FitVibe – it was great for last-minute toning.

Have you always been active and looked after your body?

I was always active and athletic when I was younger and I try and keep as active as I can now

Do you work out in the gym or are you more of an outdoors type?

At the moment I’m more of an outdoors type, although I’m currently converting my garage into a gym.

Sarah Harding Prepares For Life After Girls Aloud

    2010 - 06.28
The Girls Aloud singer -who owns her own night club- knows Girls Aloud won’t last forever so she’s undertaking other ventures to ensure permanent financial security. She said:

“I’m having lots of meeting about things that are in the pipeline for later in the year. I invest in property too. I’ve got to make sure I secure my future. I do have a business head on my shoulders despite what people think.”

Girls Aloud are currently on a break and while Sarah has been launching an acting career -she appeared in the latest St Trinian’s movie- she believes the break has done her good. She said:
It’s a transitional period. My mind is in loads of different places at the moment. Being on my own is weird but it’s definitely more peaceful. I’m calmer.”

Her band mates are also working on their own projects. Cheryl Cole is enjoying a successful solo career, as well as being a judge on “The X Factor”, Nicola Roberts has launched her own make-up range Dainty Doll, Nadine Coyle has been recording her solo album in LA and Kimberley Walsh has been the face of New Look, as well as working as a TV presenter.

Girls (not) Aloud: Sarah Harding gets the giggles after going into the men’s toilets at Hard Rock Calling

    2010 - 06.26

It was a case of Girls most definitely not Aloud at Hard Rock Calling today when Sarah Harding tried to go into the men’s toilets.

The 28-year-old singer collapsed into a fit of giggles after she was spotted making the embarrassing mistake at the event in London’s Hyde Park.

Wearing a white vest top with a dinosaur image and the slogan ‘Where You Been?’ teamed with denim hotpants, Sarah was suitably dressed for the 27C heat at the event, and made sure she stayed hydrated by carrying a bottle of beer.

While things have been a bit quiet for Sarah on the Girls Aloud front, the star insists she has many other plans for the future that do not revolve around the band.

She said recently: ‘I’m having lots of meeting about things that are in the pipeline for later in the year.

‘I invest in property too. I’ve got to make sure I secure my future. I do have a business head on my shoulders despite what people think.’

Sarah made the decision to shun perhaps the most famous music event of the weekend – Glastonbury in Somerset – to attend Hard Rock Calling.

But she was in good company, with performances from Jamiroquai Pearl Jam and The Hives.

    Sarah Harding’s clingy confession

    2010 - 06.23

Sarah Harding can be a “clingy” girlfriend.

The Girls Aloud star – who is currently dating DJ Tom Crane – admits she can be slightly overbearing at the start of a relationship, but insists she soon relaxes her attitude.

She said: “At the beginning of a relationship I’m clingy but after six months it changes. I like my independence.”

At the beginning of a relationship I’m clingy but after six months it changes. I like my independence.

Sarah – who has been in a relationship with Tom for almost three years – insists she has now put her partying lifestyle behind her and loves nothing more than spending time at home with her boyfriend.

She explained in an interview with LOOK magazine: “On Sundays we make sure we have either a cinema night, go out for food or cook at home. We rent loads of DVDs. We’ve got a massive list we’re working out way through!

“We’re not a clingy couple – when we go out Tom does his thing and I stick with the girls.”

Girls Aloud are currently on hiatus and the 28-year-old beauty – who has undertaken several acting projects – admits she is enjoying her time away from touring with the group because she can be a “housewife”.

She said: “Now I’m doing normal days, I go home and make dinners- a bit like a housewife.”

    Sarah Harding’s Tummy Trouble

    2010 - 06.22

Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding has admitted she felt the pressures to stay slim during her time with the group and that she hates her muffin top.

Sarah Harding hates her “muffin top”.

The Girls Aloud singer – who is a slender UK size 10 – insists she has insecurities about her body but dresses carefully in order to hide her flaws.

She said: “I hate my muffin tops – that’s why I like leggings. They’re good at disguising them. People never believe I have muffin tops, but I’m just very good at hiding the fact.”

The ‘Biology’ hitmaker admits her weight often yo-yos, particularly as she is currently on hiatus from the group, but refuses to moderate her food intake to stay “unreasonably” thin.

She explained in an interview with heat magazine: “I’ve put on a bit of weight in the last year as we haven’t been touring. I was a 12 when Girls Aloud formed.

“I’ve definitely become increasingly conscious of my size as time’s gone on, especially being in front of the camera so much. But you need to remember that you’re a role model for young girls and being skinny-tastic is unreasonable and just doesn’t look nice.

“If your body wants a McDonald’s, give it one. I live in the country now and it’s easier to eat healthily. We have a veg patch – I grow leeks, carrots, strawberries and lettuce.”

Sarah – who is in a relationship with DJ Tom Crane – also insisted she eats more when on tour, despite criticism of the group’s weight.

She added: “When we tour, people always think we’re not eating enough, but actually we’re eating more. If I put on weight, it’s all muscle and I tend to look thinner.”

    Company meets Sarah Harding!

    2010 - 06.21

Sarah Harding has landed the top job as the new legs of Veet (we can’t think of  anyone more fitting the job!) so when she invited me down for a girly chat one afternoon last week I jumped at the chance – one-on-one with a member of Girls Aloud to talk about all things beauty related? Erm, can you say dream job!

Kicking off our shoes, tying up our hair and pulling off our false lashes we curled up on the sofa for a chat while scoffing Haribo Starmix….

Congratulations on your new title as ‘The Legs of Veet’. You’re looking very glam!

Sarah: Thanks hon. It’s hard work trying to be glamorous all day, I’m so not used to being dressed up in the daytime.

You manage it well! Speaking of which, hair removal generally isn’t seen as that exciting but you’re glamming it up – how do you feel about being the ‘legs’ of Veet?

Sarah: I kind of like it. It’s nice to be asked to do it, to have my legs recognised. I’d never thought about them much but legs are something that we women are always focusing on making sure that they’re smooth and look good. And of course I’ve used Veet throughout the years. It’s such a great, easy product to use and now it’s got the new velvet rose scent it’s even better.

So do you class your legs as one of your top assets?

Sarah: I’m noticing them a lot more now because of this but until recently I hadn’t really taken much notice of them. Our stylist always said I had great legs, she was always trying to get me to show them off. The only thing I wish is that they were a bit longer, but that’s what heels are for.

You must work hard to keep them in shape, is it down to all the dancing that you do with Girls Aloud?

Sarah: I haven’t danced for a while because I’m ‘resting’ (the girls are all pursuing different things before they team back up as a band) so I’ve been giving my body a break from all of that. When we were on tour we all got so skinny and it’s just not sexy, we all look better with a bit of curve. I’m doing some kick boxing and Pilates now which is a bit gentler. The dancing burns off too much whereas this means that I get to keep my curves and tone up.

You’ve been papped looking gorgeous in a bikini quite a lot recently – do you make extra effort to look good when you’re on holiday?

Sarah: It’s always when I’m away that I get papped!! Recently Tommy and I were on holiday in Barbados and the hotel guys warned me there were paps there but there wasn’t a pool, the hotel was literally on the beach so what could I do? I love my swimming costumes and bikinis though so even when there’s no one around I change bikini about three times a day. Also, I love buying bits and bobs on holiday like coral necklaces off the guys on the beach but apart from that I don’t bother with any jewellery on holiday.

So you’re a splash in the sea kind of girl rather than a sun lounger poser?

Sarah: I need to be in the water, I can’t just lie there and sweat! I either lie by the pool dangling my feet in, jump around in the sea or lie by the edge of the sea reading a book trying to cool off. I don’t do that heels, jewellery and makeup thing – why would people wear heels on a beach?! I just don’t get those people, it’s ridiculous, how can you enjoy yourself when you’re busy posing and making sure that you look perfect? That’s just beyond showing off – relax on holiday people! Whack on some flip-flops and a sarong and chill out, there’s no point in trying too hard!

I agree. Do you have any tips on how to look after your hair when you’re away? Your hair is bleached so it must get quite dry?

Sarah: I condition it loads. I use Redken Colour Extend Sun After-Sun Mask, £16.65 or Tigi S Factor Papaya Leave In Moisture Spray, £13.95 and I leave it in and sit on the balcony reading a book. Headscarves are also great for on the beach, I got one from Topshop that comes everywhere with me. When your hair is all wet pulling it back off your face is the best feeling.

And how do you keep your skin in good condition on holiday?

Sarah: Use at least an SPF30 on your face. I didn’t used to take proper care of my skin on holiday and you can really notice the sun damage. I like Dermalogica products and I put Piz Buin In Sun Sun Lipstick, £5.38 on my cheekbones and nose too, all the usual burning places. Tommy and I underestimated how hot it would be in Barbados and we frazzled on our first day so learn from my mistake. People forget that you can still tan you’re just stopping yourself burning! Be careful girls!

Any other holiday tips for us?

Sarah: Waterproof mascara – I wear Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara, £6.99 in the day and Mac Splashproof Lash, £12.50 at night but you don’t need to wear much makeup when you’ve got a tan. Unless I’m going clubbing in Ibiza and I go for the wacky Ziggy Stardust look then I really don’t wear much. Maybe a bit of eyeliner, mascara, a touch of bronzer on the cheekbones, try a bit of bronzer on the lids too and Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, £23 on the lips. And of course, make sure you pack some Veet too!

    Where’s your favourite holiday destination?

Sarah: When I was growing up I used to do all the clubbing holidays in Kavos and Ayia Napa with my friends and we had such a laugh going out listening to music and dancing. All my girly holidays are out the window now! Me and Tommy went to Thailand and that was great – the scenery is amazing, the foods incredible and Thai massages everyday were unreal! I’m really into watersports too and the Maldives is a great place for diving, I saw the most incredible fish!

You must be quite confident about your looks?

Sarah: Not as confident as people probably think I am. I think every girl has their own insecurity and they find ways to cover it up. When I was a teenager I used to hide behind my hair the whole time and now when I’m going out at night I like to put on a sheet of makeup but in the daytime when I’m not around people I’m completely different and go barefaced.

Would you say you had a signature look?

Sarah: I’m a real chameleon I think. I go from glam to edgy to natural according to whatever I’m doing. I like that though, I love playing with make-up, vamping it up and experimenting with different looks. Rihanna’s look is really cool – all the mad makeup and lashes, I love that stuff. You can’t do that everyday though, unless you’re Gaga!

How do you bounce back after a heavy night?

Sarah: Rule number one – I don’t do that anymore, I cannot work with a hangover! I guess drink lots of water, pile on the concealor and eat lots of sausages! Tommy swears by them! I’m in bed by 10pm most nights now but at weekends I get the girls round and get the karaoke out.

    What’s your song?

Sarah: Tommy’s banned me from singing it – Mustang Sally!!! Haha, can’t believe I told you! I was with Jo Wood the other week and I got on the piano and started playing ‘Let It Be’ then someone else got on and played ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’ and we had a big sing song, it was so much fun.

What beauty product can’t you live without?

Sarah: Apart form Veet, Eight Hour Cream and Maybelline mascara it’s got to be my sunglasses. Stick my sunglasses on, slick on some lip balm and I’m good to go!

Surgery – don’t do it or never say never?

Sarah: Never say never! I think each to their own. As Madonna says, ‘I’m not against it but I’m against talking about it because you can’t win if you do talk about it and you can’t win if you don’t!’
