It’s Hard not to look radiant

On March 9, 2011, in Sarah Harding, by SarahIsABabe

TO me, hangovers mean a puffy face, sallow skin and overgrown stubble.

But top marks to SARAH HARDING who still looked radiant after her engagement celebrations on Monday night.

Ok, so she hid under trackies and had sunnies glued to her face.

But she still found time to do her lippy and shoot snappers a grin.

The GIRLS ALOUD star had been busy partying with fiancé TOM CRANE the previous evening.

Bandmates NICOLA ROBERTS and KIMBERLEY WALSH were also at the posh bash at London’s Brompton Club.

Before the big night, the St Trinian’s star was spotted darting across town wearing hairdressing pins.

Instead of killing time in a salon, the 29-year-old created her glam 50s-style do while on the move.

I’m liking this gutsy dressed-down Sarah.

At least she’s more interested in what shot she’ll be downing next instead of looking perfect.

I do wonder if she’s ever heard a RAMONES track in her life though.

SARAH HARDING’S PARTY LASTS UNTIL THE NEXT DAY

On March 9, 2011, in Sarah Harding, by SarahIsABabe

SARAH Harding threw an epic engagement party which lasted until lunchtime the following day.

Sarah Harding, who got engaged to DJ Tom Crane on New Year’s Eve, threw the mother of all bashes at London’s private members’ club The Brompton.

And in true Harding style she was still partying with her bessies the following afternoon with a karaoke singalong in her hotel room.
One party-goer told us: “Most people who attended were clever enough to book the whole week off.

“Sarah knows how to throw a good knees-up so everyone prepared for a wild night.
“We were still up at 2pm the day after singing karaoke in her hotel room.”
Sarah and Tom invited a host of celeb pals, including Girls Aloud bandmates Kimberley Walsh, 29, and Nicola Roberts, 25, actor Jason Statham, 38, and girlfriend Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, 23, Jo Wood, 54, and Will Mellor, 34.
Bandmates Cheryl Cole, 27, and Nadine Coyle, 25, were both stuck in LA due to work commitments.
Nadine sent a Twitter message saying: “I hope my lovely Sarah H has a great party tonight. Shame I can’t be there due to commitments in US. We will have to have another one. Xx”

While Sarah, 29, wore a glamorous floor-length black dress, fiancé Tom, 31, donned some nifty blue suede shoes with a dapper suit.
Our source said: “Tom and Sarah looked so in love all night, dancing together to cheesy 80s songs.
“They drafted in crates of champagne and Jason Statham bought everyone a round of drinks.
“After The Brompton the party headed back to the Kensington Hotel and carried on until the following morning in their room.
“A few friends left at 6am and Sarah phoned them up saying: ‘Why did you bail? You lightweight.’ ” Sarah finally left the hotel at 4pm.

Harding reveals her Tarantino dream

On March 5, 2011, in Sarah Harding, by SarahIsABabe

Sarah Harding has revealed she’d love to work with Quentin Tarantino.

The Girls Aloud star, who’s branched out into acting in recent years, said the Kill Bill director is top of her wish list of people to work with.

“He would be right up my street. I’d love to be the Mia character from Pulp Fiction, I love his stuff,” she said.

“I’ve got a feeling I might have to showcase a few more things before he’d even consider me, but that would be an honour.”

Sarah is currently sporting an edgier raven-haired look. The new brunette, who starred in the 2007 St Trinian’s comedy, said she doesn’t want to get typecast as “your typical blonde heroine”.

“There’s nothing wrong with getting a bit more down and dirty, and looking a bit more shoddy and roughed up for a role,” she said.

Sarah – the face of the HTC Incredible S smartphone in matte black from The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy – added: “It’s nice to show off a different side when it comes to your acting and be a bit grittier.

“Ideally I prefer those kind of roles. I’m not averse to comedy or having a laugh but I kind of want to do stuff that’s a bit grittier first.”

The HTC Incredible S was launched in The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy yesterday, and normally-blonde Girls Aloud member Sarah Harding even went as far as to dye her hair black to match the handset.

Featuring in both the initial photoshoot and being the face of the phone, if you like, Harding’s new look was designed to match the sleek black finish of the new handset. That, or to help her win a part in the next Twilight movie.

“Doing the shoot for the HTC Incredible S really brought out my dark side,” she said. “It’s the first one I’ve done since changing my hair colour so it was fun seeing the shots; it felt like I was looking at a different person. What a cool mobile phone to be the face of, I love the slick matte-black design that plays on all the amazing stuff that it’s got going on inside. It’s the perfect accessory to compliment my new hair colour!”

The HTC Incredible S is a Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy exclusive, and is now available in around 800 stores countrywide. It features a 4.1-inch Super LCD touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with 720p video shooting ability, and, mercifully, doesn’t know any of the words to Love Machine.

She’s only been raven-hared for two weeks, but Sarah Harding is fully embracing her darker side in a vampy new photoshoot.

The Girls Aloud singer puts her bubbly blonde days firmly in the past as she smoulders in an all-black outfit and dramatic make-up in a new ad campaign.

Looking every inch the femme fatale, the 29-year-old looked slinky in black power suit and a pair of killer heels as she posed with the new matte-black HTC Incredible S mobile phone.

Harding posed for the shoot just two weeks after she debuted her new hair colour at London Fashion Week.

Harding’s new look is inspired by Natalie Portman’s Oscar-winning film Black Swan.

Following her engagement to DJ Tom Crane on New Year’s Eve in the Maldives, Harding is planning a Gothic-themed wedding, thought to be later this year.

She said last month: ‘I’m obsessed with Black Swan. I love that dark, Gothic kind of feel.

‘I want to channel the dark, Gothic feel into the wedding. I want everything to be dark, the decoration on the tables and everything.

‘Tom wants something more traditional but I want to show a bit of my dark side. I would love to have it in a Gothic castle.’

While promoting the new phone, Harding admitted she was keeping her fingers crossed that bandmate Cheryl Cole would be offered a judging role on X Factor USA.

She said: ‘I think it would be very good for her, she’d fly the flag for over here as well, so fingers crossed.’

Harding also laughed off rumours of a rift between her bandmates and Nadine Coyle, who lives in Los Angeles.

She said: ‘We’re very much still a group. Nadine lives on the other side of the Atlantic so it’s not like we can pop over every five minutes for a cup of tea.

‘What can you do? At the end of the day we see her when we see her or whatever. She’s always been a bit of a free spirit.’

• The matte-black HTC Incredible S is available exclusively at The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy.

Sixteen-year-old Thandeka was five when her father was murdered in front of her at home in Uitsig, a shanty town outside Cape Town. Her family fell apart and she was taken in by a man who used her as a drug runner. By ten she was living on the streets.

Today she’s at secondary school, getting good grades and dreams of being a singer. She’s one of many children whose lives have been turned around by the New Life Community Project, which trains local women to support and educate street children. ‘No one ever wanted me, my mother wasn’t there for me, I had nowhere to sleep, but New Life changed everything,’ Thandeka tells me.

Last year, British Airways launched Flying Start, a new charity partnership with Comic Relief UK. BA’s new CEO Keith Williams and long-term supporter of Comic Relief UK and Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding are in South Africa to raise awareness of some of the projects they fund. ‘I wanted to see for myself the work that’s being done,’ says Harding. ‘I feel privileged to be here and hope we can help make a difference.’

Our planned walk around Uitsig is cancelled because of a spate of shootings, so we meet New Life’s director Gerrie Smit, some of the women he works with, and children they’ve helped, in their HQ on an industrial estate on the edge of the township.

Smit talks of the harshness of daily life in Uitsig: the poverty, the crime, the drug problems (crystal meth or ‘tik’ — cheap and highly addictive — and glue-sniffing are endemic). He shows us heartbreaking drawings by children depicting violence, rape and drugs — the grim realities of their world.

The problems are complex, but Smit’s team of street workers and home-schooling mothers help children recover a sense of worth, try to reintegrate them with their families, teach them during the day, and eventually get them back into school and in the community. The children we meet are testament to the scheme’s success.

‘It’s incredible to see the work they’re doing,’ says Williams. ‘These women rise above the difficulty of their environment and work to educate and bring children back into the community. It’s only one of the great projects Comic Relief UK funds and by making a donation you’ll make a difference. It’s important to get involved.’

Comic Relief UK currently funds 23 diverse projects in South Africa, from legal centres fighting for land rights to daycare for children affected by HIV/Aids. Across in Khayelitsha, another shanty town that’s a world away from the glamour of downtown Cape Town, we head to the Michael Mapongwana clinic, the base for Mothers2Mothers, an organisation that helps HIV-positive pregnant women protect their unborn children from the virus.

In South Africa, around 11 per cent of the population is HIV positive and one in three women aged 25-29 is living with HIV. But mother-to-child transmission is almost entirely preventable. In the West, paediatric HIV has virtually been eliminated, but rates remain dangerously high in Africa.

Mothers2Mothers works by recruiting ‘mentor mothers’, who are also HIV positive, to support and educate pregnant women who discover they are too. With stigma still surrounding the condition, many don’t want to attend the clinic and hide the fact they’re infected. The goal is to destigmatise the disease and encourage ‘disclosure’, so they don’t need to live with their secret, have access to the right treatment and have HIV-negative babies.

One by one a group of young women tells us their stories. ‘I was three months pregnant when I discovered I was positive,’ says 29-year-old Melissa, now pregnant with her second child. ‘It was a shock, I was crying, confused and felt I couldn’t tell my partner. But the support group helped me — and I had access to the right drugs so my baby is HIV negative,’ she beams. The statistics speak for the project’s success: up to 30 new pregnant women come here daily – in 2010, none had an HIV-positive baby.

‘It was amazing to hear these women’s experiences. They were HIV positive but living positively,’ says Harding. ‘They are proof  there is hope. Mothers2Mothers needs money to keep educating people, so that more children can start their lives HIV free.’

On 18 March, Comic Relief UK hosts Red Nose Day, a huge fundraising event that harnesses the power of entertainment to change lives. And every day on every flight during the year, BA is collecting for Flying Start. So why not check your pockets and wallets for any loose change in any currency and put it into the envelope provided.

‘Please just give whatever you can,’ says Harding. ‘You can help turn lives around — I’ve seen it first hand.’

Your small change is making a huge difference to disadvantaged lives around the world thanks to British Airways and Comic Relief UK.

Donations can be given to cabin crew or online at ba.com/flyingstart.
