My body and I: Sarah Harding

The Girls Aloud singer and actress, 28, lives with her boyfriend DJ Tom Crane, two cats and a dog in Buckinghamshire

What is your daily beauty routine?

I use Tisserand All-Over Skin Wash, then I moisturise with La Prairie Cellular Platinum Rare, which has a subtle shimmer. Occasionally I exfoliate with By Terry Grain de Rose, and if my skin is not in great condition, I apply By Terry Skin-Expert Detox & Rescue.

Your make-up bag staples?

Mac Splashproof Lash mascara, eyelash curlers and Lancôme Tropiques Minérale Bronzer.

What’s your view on plastic surgery?

As long as it’s subtle and it helps someone with their confidence, I don’t have a problem with it.

Your desert-island beauty essential?

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream is amazing.

What makes you feel glamorous?

Having smooth, moisturised legs is a must. I use Veet Suprem’ Essence In-shower Hair Removal Cream.

What is your favourite high-street shop?

Definitely Topshop. It’s great for on-trend stuff, and you don’t have to spend a fortune.

Do you have a signature scent?

At the moment I’m using Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle Twist and Spray.

Your best-ever beauty treatment?

The hot-stone massage at the Grove in Hertfordshire [thegrove.co.uk] is really fabulous.

Who is on your beauty speed dial?

Sam at Adee Phelan in London’s Covent Garden [adeephelan.com] looks after my hair. I’m growing it out at the moment, so I have a few extensions.

Your tip for body confidence?

Body-brushing before you get in the shower helps get rid of cellulite, although it’s not a magic fix. I still have a bit, as I think all girls do.

What would we find in your fridge?

Water, cheese, ham, veggies. I’m very specific about where everything goes, so if Tom puts something in the wrong place he hears about it!

Are there any foods you avoid?

I try to cut back on carbs. Bread is the enemy!

Guilty pleasure?

Spaghetti bolognese with butter on the pasta and loads of parmesan cheese on top.

Do you take supplements?

Loads. Cod liver oil, a few kelp tablets before I eat – they help break down dairy and carbs – vitamin A and glucosamine.

Your feel-good philosophy?

Try to relax and be happy.

If you could change anything about your body, what would it be?

I’d love a perkier bum!

How do you stay in shape?

I do pilates, which is great for toning, and I walk the dog a lot.

How much sleep do you get?

I always make time for a good eight hours.

‘Great escapes? Thailand is my favourite place for exploring off the beaten track. Mauritius is perfect for relaxation

‘Marilyn Monroe is my beauty icon. But I like to take inspiration from lots of different people’

‘My designers of choice are Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen (pictured)’

‘This Georges Chakra gown is one of my favourite dresses – I wore it to the St Trinian’s 2 premiere’

Sarah Harding is the new spokesperson for the Veet Suprem’ Essence range

Sarah Harding: what’s in my make-up bag?

Blush Subtil in ‘Rose Boisee’ £25, by Lancome. Blushers in pinky shades really suit my skin tone. This one is lovely and subtle. I use a big brush to build up the colour for evening

Nail polish in ‘Maddox Street’ £10.50, by Nails Inc. I like frosty steel-greys at the moment for my nails

The Colossal Mascara £6.99, by Maybelline (available nationwide). I always opt for waterproof mascaras as I find they hold your lashes better. This one gives them great volume, and lasts the day without smudging

Coco Mademoiselle £59 for 50ml eau de toilette, by Chanel (020 7493 3836). I’m mad about Chanel fragrance and this is my all-time fave. I discovered the travel size at the airport recently – it’s perfect for my handbag

Eight Hour Cream skin protectant £23, by Elizabeth Arden, from Boots. This is my ultimate handbag essential. I reach for it about 100 times a day to keep my lips and cuticles super soft

Sarah Harding on Legs long on allure

Sarah Harding is a talented beauty and self-confessed lover of a good booze up. The Girls Aloud singer and now actress tells What Women Want how she keeps looking starry eyed and fresh despite a punishing lifestyle of tours, recording, film shoots and non stop parties.

Beauty

Q.1 What is your best beauty secret? Lots of sleep! I like my sleep – a good eight hours. Lots of water is also really important. I fill a jug up and put in half a lemon and half a lime – that way I get my full 1.5 litres a day.

Q.2 What is your face cleansing ritual? I don’t stick to anything for too long, I like to switch products. I use a daily exfoliator and face wash, a rose toner which helps remove dirt and a light moisturiser in the morning. I use a heavier moisturiser in the evening and a good eye cream.

Q.5 What do you use to keep your legs looking so smooth, toned and moisturised? Having hair-free legs instantly makes legs look and feel great. I’ve been using Veet’s hair removal products for years, but I’ve just started using the new Veet Suprem’ Essence Hair Removal Cream which smells lovely as well as being quick and easy to use. It leaves my legs silky soft and so moisturised.

Q.6 Do you wear much make-up or do you prefer the natural look? I don’t wear much during the day – just a little mascara or lip gloss and maybe a bit of concealer. At night I like to glam up as I like to feel special. I tend to go from one extreme to the other!

Q.7 What is your favourite foundation? I don’t tend to wear a foundation, I prefer the Mac concealer pots and Mac Mineral Powder for the day time.

Q.8 What is your favourite blusher? The Lancome bronzer/blusher or Chanel – a pinky shade.

Q.9 What colour eyeshadow do you wear and why? Goldeny brown – it makes my eyes look bluer!

Q.10 What is your favourite mascara? I like waterproof macsara as it holds your lashes better. Maybelline Colossal Effect during the day, and Mac Splash Proof in the evening because the brush has great pick up to give you a really voluminous effect.

Q.11 Do you wear lipstick or lip balm? Which brand and colour is your favourite? It depends on occasion and the look, but the majority of the time, I mix a bit of lipstick with a gloss on top. I tend to go for frosty peach or a pinky shade for a fresher daytime look.

Q.12 What one beauty product could you not do without and why? For make-up, my eye lash curlers. Because when eyelashes are curled it really opens up your eyes. The eyes are important in my ‘look’. For body, I can’t live without Veet’s new Suprem’ Essence In-Shower Hair Removal Cream for instantly hair free legs when I’m in a rush.

Q.16 What is your favourite perfume/scent and why? Chanel Mademoiselle. I bought a travel size Chanel Mademoiselle on the aeroplane recently, it’s a handbag one. I really like Rock and Rose too.

Q.17 What’s your secret to instant glamour? A good pair of shades and a bit of lipgloss!

Q.19 If you only had five minutes to get ready what would you do? Scrape my hair back, put on a big pair of shades and some lip gloss.

Q.20 What’s your rescue remedy for instantly lovely legs? My Veet Suprem’ Essence Spray On Hair Removal Cream is a lifesaver. It’s not messy and you can be precise about the amount you use. When you are touring it can be hard to keep on top of things, so you need something quick and easy.

Q.21 Tell me your desert island essential. Hairy legs are a total no-go, even if I’m stranded on a desert island, so hair remover! And sun block.

Q.22 What’s your biggest beauty indulgence? La Prairie Cellular Cream Platinum Rare. I love it. It adds a great glow to your skin.

Q.24 Tell me your current favorourite nail polish (name and make) I like Nails Inc & Duri nail polishes. I like frosty steel greys at the moment.

Q.27 If you’re going away on holiday, what essential beauty products would we find in your suitcase? I have a bag full of hair and makeup products, a good spray on sun cream – usually factor 20 or 30, face wipes, a good deodorant, and the Veet Bikini Cream Kit as it’s much less irritating than shaving. It’s perfect for sensitive body areas as it comes with a finishing cream to leave skin moisturised.

Q.28 In my make-up bag you’ll find… Eyelash curlers, waterproof mascara, Mac products and lipgloss.

Q.29 My daily beauty routine is….I get up and jump straight in the shower where I wash my face. I then moisturise my face and body and put on minimal make up if I’m staying at home, or a little more if I’m going out for the day.

Q.30 What’s the best beauty tip you’ve been given? Never go to bed with your makeup on

Q.31 What’s the beauty secret/tip you would share with a friend? Always play up Mascara and eyelashes. Eyes are the main feature of your face.

Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding, 28, on Botox and her muffin top

HAIR

“My hair colour is naturally mousey brown. I dye it blonde, so I use Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner, from £10 each, to stop it drying out. I love experimenting with different wigs when I’m on tour with Girls Aloud, and I’m thinking about going dark at the moment.”

LIPS

“Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, £13, is a great all-rounder. It keeps my lips moisturised and shiny. Christian Dior does really good, natural lipglosses, and sometimes I’ll mix them up with a Mac lipstick or liner.”

SKIN

“With my bright-blonde hair, I can look really washed out if I don’t have a tan, so I always use St Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan for Face And Body, £13. I love having tanned, smooth legs, and Veet Suprem’ Essence Spray On Hair Removal Cream, £4.23, is really effective.”

FACE

“When I wear make-up on stage, it’s like I’m wearing a mask: I feel confident. I’m not going to say if I’ve had Botox or not – but I can still frown and my lines move. Age gets the better of us all at some point.”

EYES

“I like my eyes. I can look feisty with make-up or innocent without. I use La Prairie Cellular Radiance Eye Cream, £186, morning and night, and I keep my lashes looking big with Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara, £6.99.”

BODY

“I’ve not been on stage dancing so much in the last year, so I’ve got my curves back. I hate my muffin top – it spills over jeans – so I’ve started Pilates to tone up. I get cellulite too, but body-brushing helps – I do it every day before I shower.”

GIRLS Aloud singer Sarah Harding has just been announced as the face and legs of beauty brand Veet . LIZ LAMB discovers her fashion and beauty secrets and finds out how she stays looking so good.

Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding

DO you feel under pressure to look good or thinner because you’re in a girl band

Yeah of course. Anyone who is being photographed on a regular basis is going to care what they look like. When I’m at home behind closed doors I don’t care though, that’s me time.

What three products would you take with you if you were stuck on a desert island?

Veet! Hairy legs are a total no-go, even if I’m stranded on a desert island! Also I’d take Piz Buin sun block and a good waterproof mascara.

What are your top tips for keeping your skin looking good?

Lots of sleep! I like my sleep – a good eight hours. Lots of water is also really important. I fill a jug up and put in half a lemon and half a lime – that way I get my full 1.5 litres a day.

How do you keep yourself in shape?

Having dogs and living in the countryside is a great help as I’m up and down hills walking the dogs everyday. I love horse riding, which is great, but I don’t get chance to ride so much at the moment. Before the Girls Aloud tour last year we all used the FitVibe – it was great for last-minute toning.

How would you describe your style?

It totally depends on what I’m doing and where I’m going. When I’m at home I like to be comfortable and relaxed. I like to try lots of different looks.

What are three essential items in your wardrobe?

A pair of great shoes, a pair of sunglasses and a great maxi dress for the summer.

Do you exercise regularly? If so, how long for and what is your routine?

I’m quite lucky as my upper body looks after itself but I need to work at keeping my bum and legs toned. If I’m feeling self-conscious I wear a really great pair of tight jeans and a baggy top and I feel great.

What is your favourite Veet product?

I love the new Suprem’ Essence range as the products give me that hint of luxury and pampering at home. If I’m in a rush to get out of the house I use the In Shower cream as I can do two things at once!

Why did you chose to become the ‘face and legs’ for Veet?

As well as being the leading depilatory brand in the UK, Veet is a beauty brand and the products do what they say – they leave skin touchably smooth for longer! The great scent of the Suprem’ Essence range (1) and the fact that they are moisturising, ensure that I look and feel great. I have been using Veet for years.

It’s really important for me to make sure I care for my legs and how they look. I’m always doing appearances and shoots and I generally wear short dresses and Veet’s creams are brilliant for giving me smooth, gorgeous legs. It’s so easy to use (and it lasts twice as long as shaving) which means that I’m ready for anything!

What do you consider to be your best feature?

I like to dress up my eyes and love trying different looks. Your eyes are a great blank canvas to change your look. I also like my legs – when they’re tanned and smooth, I feel instantly sexy.

What are your essential holiday beauty tips?

I have a bag full of hair and make-up products, a good spray-on sun cream – usually factor 20 or 30, face wipes, a good deodorant, and the Veet Bikini Cream Kit (2) as it’s much less irritating than shaving. It’s perfect for sensitive body areas as it comes with a finishing cream.

What is your favourite foundation?

I don’t tend to wear a foundation, I prefer the Mac concealer pots (3) and Mac Mineral Powder for day time.

What is your favourite blusher?

The Lancome bronzer/blusher or Chanel – a pinky shade.

What colour eyeshadow do you wear and why?

Golden brown – it makes my eyes look bluer!

What is your favourite mascara?

I like waterproof mascara as it holds your lashes better. Maybelline Collosal Effect during the day, and Mac Splash Proof (4) in the evening because the brush has great pick up to give you a really voluminous effect.

Do you wear lipstick or lip balm? Which brand and colour is your favourite?

It depends on occasion and the look, but the majority of the time, I mix a bit of lipstick with a gloss on top. I tend to go for frosty peach or a pinky shade for a fresher daytime look.

What one beauty product could you not do without and why?

For make-up, my eyelash curlers. Because when eyelashes are curled it really opens up your eyes. The eyes are important in my look. For body, I can’t live without Veet’s new Suprem’ Essence In-Shower Hair Removal Cream for instantly hair-free legs when I’m in a rush.

What is your favourite perfume/scent and why?

Chanel Mademoiselle (5) . I bought a travel-size Chanel Madamemoiselle on the aeroplane recently, it’s a handbag one. I really like Rock and Rose too.

What’s your secret to instant glamour?

A good pair of shades and a bit of lipgloss!

If you only had five minutes to get ready what would you do?

Scrape my hair back, put on a big pair of shades and some lip gloss. If I’ve got my legs out, I’d use Veet Suprem’ Essence Hair Removal Cream as it leaves my legs hair free and moisturised in just three minutes!

My daily beauty routine is….

I get up and jump straight in the shower where I was my face. I then moisturise my face and body and put on minimal make up if I’m staying at home, or a little more if I’m going out for the day.

I protect my skin and hair in the sun with….

A Dermatologica high-factor facial moisturiser, a leave-in conditioner and a headscarf.

What’s the best beauty tip you’ve been given?

Never go to bed with your makeup on.

What’s the beauty secret/tip you would share with a friend?

Always play up mascara and eyelashes. Eyes are the main feature of your face.

I like to dress up my eyes. They are a great blank canvas to change your look. I also like my legs – when they’re tanned and smooth, I feel instantly sexy

SARAH HARDING: MY DIET AND FITNESS SECRETS

SEXY Sarah Harding has put on weight since Girls Aloud took a break – but is loving her curvier look.

And as a new photoshoot for Veet beauty products shows, she’s looks hotter than ever. Her figure is working for boyfriend DJ Tom Crane, 30, who plans to propose this year.

Now, in an exclusive interview, the 28-year-old reveals her food and fitness regime.

Do you ever feel the need to diet?

Only when I’m feeling bloated and that’s usually when I’ve eaten carbs. Over the years I’ve learned what my body likes and doesn’t like. I like salad and vegetables, I don’t eat a huge amount of meat, but if I fancy a steak I’ll have one.

Do you live to eat or eat to live?

I love food. My boyfriend and I cook at home together and love going to restaurants. We’re both very good in the kitchen. I’m growing my own vegetables, I’m loving my home-grown lettuce – it tastes so much better than anything from the supermarket! We’ve got carrots, leeks, raspberrys, olives, herbs – the list is endless.

What does a typical day consist of in terms of food and drink?

Coffee in the morning, and maybe a bowl of cereal or fresh fruit, although I am not a huge breakfast fan. Occasionally I might make pancakes with bacon. For lunch I’ll have a ham salad sandwich or a salad or sushi. Dinner is my favourite meal. If I eat too much for lunch I don’t enjoy my dinner. I’ll have a spag bol, Chinese or chicken kievs and salad. I’m really into well-cooked broccoli with butter and salt at the moment.

What is your one food temptation?

Sugar. Particularly Haribo.

What’s your favourite food?

I love spaghetti bolognese. I love cooking it too.

Do you find vitamins and supplements beneficial?

I do take a lot of vitamins to keep myself in shape – Vitamin E, glucosamine, evening primrose oil, acidophilus for digestion, and kelp tablets before you eat to help bloating.

Are you conscious of what you eat?

Not incredibly, no. I tend to eat what my body feels like it needs. I like my sugar, but everything in moderation. It’s all about the balance. If you’re eating really well most of the time, there’s no reason not to have something you fancy.

What is your best beauty secret?

Lots of sleep. I like my sleep – a good eight hours. Lots of water is also important. I fill a jug up and put in half a lemon and half a lime. That way I get my full 1.5 litres a day.

What is your daily beauty routine?

I get up and jump straight in the shower where I wash my face. I then moisturise my face and body and put on minimal make-up if I’m staying at home, or a little more if I’m going out for the day.

What do you use to keep your legs looking so smooth, toned and moisturised?

Having hair-free legs instantly makes legs look and feel great. I’ve just started using the new Veet Suprem’ Essence Hair Removal Cream which smells lovely as well as being quick and easy to use. It leaves my legs silky soft and so moisturised.

How do you keep fit and so toned, especially your legs?

Having dogs and living in the countryside is a great help as I’m up and down hills walking the dogs every day. I love horse riding, but I don’t get the chance to ride so much at the moment. Before the Girls Aloud tour last year we all used the FitVibe – it was great for last-minute toning.

Have you always been active and looked after your body?

I was always active and athletic when I was younger and I try and keep as active as I can now

Do you work out in the gym or are you more of an outdoors type?

At the moment I’m more of an outdoors type, although I’m currently converting my garage into a gym.

Sarah Harding’s clingy confession

Sarah Harding can be a “clingy” girlfriend.

The Girls Aloud star – who is currently dating DJ Tom Crane – admits she can be slightly overbearing at the start of a relationship, but insists she soon relaxes her attitude.

She said: “At the beginning of a relationship I’m clingy but after six months it changes. I like my independence.”

At the beginning of a relationship I’m clingy but after six months it changes. I like my independence.

Sarah – who has been in a relationship with Tom for almost three years – insists she has now put her partying lifestyle behind her and loves nothing more than spending time at home with her boyfriend.

She explained in an interview with LOOK magazine: “On Sundays we make sure we have either a cinema night, go out for food or cook at home. We rent loads of DVDs. We’ve got a massive list we’re working out way through!

“We’re not a clingy couple – when we go out Tom does his thing and I stick with the girls.”

Girls Aloud are currently on hiatus and the 28-year-old beauty – who has undertaken several acting projects – admits she is enjoying her time away from touring with the group because she can be a “housewife”.

She said: “Now I’m doing normal days, I go home and make dinners- a bit like a housewife.”

Sarah Harding’s Tummy Trouble

Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding has admitted she felt the pressures to stay slim during her time with the group and that she hates her muffin top.

Sarah Harding hates her “muffin top”.

The Girls Aloud singer – who is a slender UK size 10 – insists she has insecurities about her body but dresses carefully in order to hide her flaws.

She said: “I hate my muffin tops – that’s why I like leggings. They’re good at disguising them. People never believe I have muffin tops, but I’m just very good at hiding the fact.”

The ‘Biology’ hitmaker admits her weight often yo-yos, particularly as she is currently on hiatus from the group, but refuses to moderate her food intake to stay “unreasonably” thin.

She explained in an interview with heat magazine: “I’ve put on a bit of weight in the last year as we haven’t been touring. I was a 12 when Girls Aloud formed.

“I’ve definitely become increasingly conscious of my size as time’s gone on, especially being in front of the camera so much. But you need to remember that you’re a role model for young girls and being skinny-tastic is unreasonable and just doesn’t look nice.

“If your body wants a McDonald’s, give it one. I live in the country now and it’s easier to eat healthily. We have a veg patch – I grow leeks, carrots, strawberries and lettuce.”

Sarah – who is in a relationship with DJ Tom Crane – also insisted she eats more when on tour, despite criticism of the group’s weight.

She added: “When we tour, people always think we’re not eating enough, but actually we’re eating more. If I put on weight, it’s all muscle and I tend to look thinner.”
