Sarah Harding Interview

viv

SINGER Sarah Harding was one fifth of the band Girls Aloud until they split after their 10th anniversary last year. She’s also kick-started an acting career with roles in the films St Trinian’s and Run For Your Wife. Sarah, 32, lives in Buckinghamshire and is dating her childhood sweetheart, DJ Mark Foster.
What are your plans for summer?

It’s music, music, music. I’m hard at work on my debut solo album. I will be going under the radar for a while to get it finished.

You’re becoming quite the DJ. Where’s the most unusual place you’ve done a gig?
It’s something I do for fun, but when I got asked to do a silent disco, I was intrigued. It was hilarious. I was singing along to songs while people wandered around, bopping along, with these noise-cancelling headphones on.

What’s been the funniest moment of your career?
The BRITS in 2009 when we won best single for The Promise. I got overexcited and on stage I yelled, “It’s about time,” not realising the microphone picked it up.

What’s the worst job you’ve had?
In a debt recovery call centre. The amount of abuse we got was horrendous to the point we got sent on an assertiveness training course. I learnt to be sensitive where it was needed and how to be firm when people are mucking about, but it was very draining.

What’s the strangest fan mail you’ve received?
When I was in Girls Aloud I received a lot of underwear from men. But with the advent of social media like Twitter, more fans use that – it’s direct with fewer surprises to catch us off guard!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
Don’t force yourself to be something you’re not. Be yourself, be genuine, as sincerity is important and you’re never going to please everyone all of the time. Obviously there are times when you have to be on your best behaviour, but I tend to get on with my life as normally as I can.

Who would you swap places with for 24 hours and why?
Kate Middleton. I would love to see what it’s like to be a member of the royal family. I’m obsessed with Kate and Wills and little George at the moment. I think they’ve endeared themselves to the British public and beyond.

What’s the best showbiz party you’ve been to?
After a Vivienne Westwood show at Claridges. They’d decorated it like a fairground, so there were carousel horses, candyfloss machines, fake tattoo parlours and all the games.
