Dr Liz O’Riordan talks about the trial

I’m thrilled to be able to tell you about a new breast cancer research project just launched in memory of the singer Sarah Harding.

Sarah died in 2021 aged 39 from metastatic breast cancer. One of her final wishes was to find new ways to spot breast cancer at an earlier stage when it is more treatable.

The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment in Young Women (Bcan-Ray) Study, led by Dr Sacha Howell, is taking place in Greater Manchester. It’s funded by the Christie Charity, CRUK and the Sarah Harding Breast Cancer appeal

It is one of the first studies in the world to identify women who are at risk of getting breast cancer in their thirties.

Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal

The Christie yesterday launched their Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal.

Sarah would be so happy that her one wish was coming true. Thank you to everyone who has donated to this amazing cause. If you want to donate yo can HERE

TAKEN FROM THE CHRISTIE

Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding had everything to live for. She was young, talented and so full of hope for the future. Then, when she was 38, she was told the awful news she had breast cancer.

With no family history of the disease and with her being so young, Sarah’s diagnosis came as a terrible shock. And now, a team of experts from The Christie are hoping to identify young women who are most at risk from breast cancer. With a donation from you today, they’re hoping that they make sure these young women can get the screening and preventative treatments they need.

Before Sarah died, Sarah spoke to her consultant Dr Sacha Howell about his research into breast cancer. It was so important to Sarah that other young women should not have to go through what she had.

Working with Dr Howell, The Christie Charity set up the Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal. This will honour Sarah’s memory by making sure that young women in the future are given the best possible chance of survival.

Sadly, Sarah didn’t get to see the launch of our project. She died on 5 September 2021, aged just 39, with her mother Marie at her side. More women aged 30 to 50 die of breast cancer than from any other cause.

If we could find those young women who are most at risk, we could do more to save them. But we need your help. Please give to The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal today and help young women at risk of breast cancer.

Girls Aloud Primark

Cheryl said: “Before Sarah passed away, we promised her we would fulfil her wish of raising money for vital research to help determine young women between the ages of 29 and 40 who could be at risk of breast cancer with no genetic history. This campaign with Primark will raise a significant amount of money to help us achieve our promise to her.”

Kimberley added: “It feels really emotional the four of us coming together to honour Sarah’s fundraising wishes. We really hope we can do her proud and raise as much money as possible. As well as raising funds, Cheryl, Nadine, Nicola and myself will continue to do everything we can to help raise awareness and encourage people to have regular check-ups.”

Nadine said: “We’re grateful to Primark for this opportunity and for all the money they will be donating in Sarah’s name. Sarah would have loved this nightwear range so much and we hope the Girls Aloud fans will too. We miss Sarah every day and we’ve come together to support this crucial cause because it will always be something close to all of our hearts.”

Lastly, Nicola expressed: “The overwhelming donation from Primark has meant we are well on our way to achieving our promise to Sarah. We feel a sense of responsibility to honour her wish to raise money that could prevent other women finding themselves in the terrifying situation she was in. To take on this baton is nothing short of a privilege. We really hope everyone loves the nightwear collection and will join us in raising as much money as possible.”

Sizes range from XS to XL and retail between £14 to £18, which is a bargain! So head down to your nearest UK and Republic of Ireland Primark stores from Sunday, 1 October, and grab yourself a new set of pyjamas for the long winter months ahead while also spending your hard-earned cash on a good cause.

50% of proceeds from the Primark collaboration will go to supporting Cancer Research UK and The Christie Charitable Fund for Sarah Harding. A minimum commitment of £500,000 will be given in equal portions to these charities to support funding Dr Sacha Howell’s vital research project at Sarah’s request.

Dr Sacha Howell, Sarah’s doctor, said: “Sarah spoke to me many times about breast cancer research and was keen for more to be done to find out why some young women are diagnosed when they have no other family members affected by the disease. We want to find out why young women in their 30s like Sarah might develop breast cancer so we can more accurately identify people with a higher risk and improve their chances of survival.”

That’s not all, as Primark will also donate £100,000 to Breast Cancer Now in the UK as part of the broader Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. At the same time, in Ireland, the budget high street retailer will support The Irish Cancer Society, with 50% of sales of the Girls Aloud nightwear being donated and a €50,000 donation to The Irish Cancer Society to help fund cancer awareness, services, and research.

Cheryl talks about The Primrose Ball

We originally learned of Sarah’s cancer diagnosis during conversations we were having about how to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Girls Aloud.
We as a five had gone through so much life together. It is impossible to describe the situations, circumstances and life experiences we shared over those years. We lived, breathed and shaped one another in so many ways. It can only end up in a family type dynamic.
Sarah was the sparky one of our group. She was full of the spark of life and loved what we did. We all had different relationships and leaned on each at different times for different reasons over the years. I always felt like a big sister to Sarah, even though she was the older one. She would come to me for advice, or speak to me in confidence to share secrets.
When we learned that she was sick I felt stumped. I had always thought I had been or could be helpful in some way. There was always a solution to a perceived issue that meant it would eventually work out when we came together. We had managed to get through so many sticky situations over the years. But now I had a deep and overwhelming feeling of complete helplessness.
I was honest with Sarah about my feelings and she understood and said she felt the same. I jumped into what I knew I could do, which was all very surface-level stuff… things like care packages, with comfort and luxury items I knew she would like and enjoy. But still. I didn’t feel helpful, I just felt numb.
In the days leading up to the last time we would meet, Sarah came to spend a few days with me. She spoke so highly of and with such gratitude for those who had helped her through her medical journey. And of how much comfort they had brought her, and moments of joy. She was so grateful!
I asked her over and over again how we could help. Was there anything she truly wanted or needed? Finally she said to me: “I would love you to create an evening, a gala of some kind for me. If I am here and can attend I will be able to thank those who have helped me through all of this, and pay that forward in a way that will help others when I’m gone.”
Unfortunately that wasn’t to be. Eight weeks later, Sarah passed.
The rest of Girls Aloud and I took up the baton soon after, rallying together to make sure we made Sarah’s last wish come true. I feel a great deal of responsibility to make it what she wanted and help create and provide help for others moving forward.
Our aim is to fund a study headed up by Sarah’s oncologist, which will look at why so many women are suffering this terrible ordeal so young, without any previous genetic markers. This vital understanding would not only help but potentially prevent others like Sarah from suffering the torment she did.
I would like to move forward by remembering Sarah before her illness. Although memories of that time do exist and are hard to shake, they hold no weight against the light she so brightly shone in the years beforehand. I have many, many more of those years to hold onto, and that is my intention. Her fun, bubbly side, her close-to-the-edge risky side, and her deeply soft and vulnerable side are some of the intricacies that made up Sarah in all of her glory.
In the last few days spent with her, we got to laugh, cry, reminisce, cook, watch spiritual programmes (our shared love) and pray together. Those are the parts I will keep in my heart as I let the illness recede into the background. Now I want to commemorate her by helping to give thanks to those who kept her going in her darkest of days and nights.
The darkest nights create the brightest stars.

Sarah – The Primrose Ball

Taken from Simon Jones website

‘THE PRIMROSE BALL’

SATURDAY 8 OCTOBER AT THE LONDONER HOTEL

HOSTED BY FEARNE COTTON AND FEATURING PERFORMANCES FROM OLLY ALEXANDER, RICKY WILSON AND CHRISSIE HYNDE

In honour of Sarah Harding, on Saturday 8th October 2022, fellow Girls Aloud bandmates and friends will host The Primrose Ball, a charity gala event at central London’s new super-boutique hotel, The Londoner.

A fundraising initiative for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Cancer Research UK, as part of The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal, it is set to be a night of the finest hospitality and entertainment in aid of life-saving cancer research.

Hosted by Cheryl, Kimberley, Nadine and Nicola, the evening will be presented by Fearne Cotton with confirmed performances by Olly Alexander, Ricky Wilson (Kaiser Chiefs) and Chrissie Hynde. A live auction will be hosted by Johnny Gould – with lots including an original canvas depicting Sarah Harding by The Connor Brothers.

Named The Primrose Ball after Sarah’s iconic line, ‘here I am walking Primrose’ from the number one Girls Aloud song ‘The Promise’, The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal will fund ground breaking research to identify new ways to predict which young women, with no family history of breast cancer, are likely to develop the disease, ensuring women like Sarah can be identified earlier on when treatment is more likely to be successful. The Primrose Ball charity gala event was at the request of Sarah and is a project that was very close to her heart.

“We are so grateful to The Londoner for hosting The Primrose Ball at their wonderful hotel. Charles Oak, Hotel Director of The Londoner and Sarah, had a very special bond and holding her gala evening there will make the night even more special. Our hope is to raise a huge amount of money that will hopefully prevent other people finding themselves in the same terrifying situation Sarah found herself in.” Cheryl, Kimberley, Nadine and Nicola.

All proceeds will go to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Cancer Research UK on behalf of The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal.
